Having a relationship with a product of technology  is not a recent notion. For example, Weird Science and Blade Runner to name only a couple, have tackled this particular subject matter. The challenge therefore, faced by writer and director of Her, Spike Jonze, was to offer a new perspective, within a new context in order to raise new ideas about a previously visited theme.

Thus, Her, set in the not too distant future, follows the story of Theodore, played brilliantly by Joaquin Phoenix as a man who is very much alone due to the recent end of his marriage, of which he is yet to sign his divorce papers. He purchases an operating system, named Samantha, voiced by Scarlett Johansson, initially to help him with admin and organisation, yet as Samantha learns and grows, he finds himself falling in love with her and entering a romantic relationship with…
